Project Surface Alloys

The goal is to study:

  • mechanisms of the formation of nanostructures during submonolayer heteroepitaxy,
  • structural end electronic properties of surface alloys,
  • influence of interaction between adsorbates on the surface profile, in particular on kinetic roughening,
  • and more in the future ...

Multiscale theory of surface alloys and inhomogeneities at solid surfaces - MuTSAI

In this project, we are going to investigate properties of surface alloys as well as effects of inhomogeneities. The project aims at deeper theoretical understanding of electronic and structural properties of surface alloys and inhomogeneities at solid surfaces with the attention to thermodynamics. It is motivated by a recent progress in practical preparation of artificial multi-component surface structures and the need for theoretical understanding. In a broader context, the proposed problem touches the expanding field of nanoscopic materials.

Strain relaxation vs. phase ordering

We study the formation of nanostructures in submonolayer heteroepitaxy of two types of bulk-immiscible adsorbates. Depending on the underlying lattice structure morphology of regular alternating stripes or islands of one componanet in the "see" of second component are observed.
